Indialantic Teen Joins National Scholar Group

The National Society of High School Scholars has chosen Cody Christensen of Indialantic for membership.

Christensen, an upcoming senior at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne, has a 4.0 grade point average.

"On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Cody has demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence," said the honor society's founder and chairman Claes Nobel in an press release announcing the honor. "Cody is now a member of a unique community of scholars, a community that represents our very best hope for the future."

As a member, Christensen is privy to a variety of exclusive scholarships, competitions, special events and programs.

According to the press release, the society has more than 150,000 members from 15,000 high schools in almost 20 countries.

Since it was organized four years ago, the society has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships.

Christensen credits his parents, Lynn and Wes Christensen, with much of his success.

"They gave me the opportunity to succeed," he said.

"I'm so proud of him, he works really hard," Wes Christensen said. "He loves the school"

The teen said the environment at Florida Air is extremely conducive to learning.

"The teachers really help and it's a wonderful atmosphere," he said.

He's maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout high school and wants to attend Florida State University, because of its strong sports management program.

His goal is to one day manage a professional sports team, hopefully the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I love sports; you could say I'm a sports geek," Christensen said.

In addition to his studies, he's working as an intern this summer with the Brevard Blue Ducks basketball team.
