DAYTONA BEACH - Florida Air Academy's boys basketball team never let a double-digit lead get it down during Thursday's Class 2A regional quarterfinals.
The Falcons' Jason West snagged a rebound with 29 seconds remaining and laid it up for two points, as Florida Air stunned state-ranked Father Lopez 76-75 in a game that seemed sealed up by the Green Wave in the third quarter.
Father Lopez led by 14 points several times early in the third quarter, only to have the Falcons chip away at the lead with short runs and scrappy defense.
Father Lopez's season came to an end at 20-8 in the final high school game ever played in the gymnasium. The Green Wave are moving to a new location after 49 years on their Madison Avenue campus.
Florida Air, which won the 2007 state title in 3A before moving to 2A this year, upped its record to 19-6, and will move on to Tuesday's regional semifinal game against Orlando Pine Castle Christian.
"We started slow, but once we got going and into the flow of our offense, they couldn't stop us for a while," said Father Lopez coach Eddie Miller. "I just thought that Billy Serle picking up four fouls was huge. But the kids played their hearts out." It was disheartening because they played so hard. . . . (Florida Air is) good and well coached, but we were ready. I thought we had a good plan."
For every loose ball grabbed by the Falcons, the Green Wave were just as deft with some of the purest shooting this side of Reggie Miller. Father Lopez's senior duo of Serle and Brennan Taylor poured it in time after time when their team needed the boost -- with Serle netting 26 points and Taylor finishing with 25.
Countering the awesome offensive showing by Serle and Taylor were Florida Air's Jonathan Frazier and West. West led the team with 25, while Frazier hit six 3-pointers en route to a 24-point night.
Early in the third quarter, it seemed Father Lopez had put away Florida Air with an 8-0 run just 1:16 into the second half. Serle and Taylor each hit 3-pointers, while Taylor Crimmins hit a shot and was fouled, though he didn't hit the free throw. Then, it was back-and-forth for the next four minutes or so. Frazier hit three of his 3-pointers and two free throws in the third quarter alone to get the Falcons back into the game.
Florida Air had narrowed the deficit to six points coming into the final period, before Serle and Taylor once again both hit to make it a 10-point lead again. But a 21-12 run to close the game -- keyed by a smothering press defense by the Falcons and not having Serle on the court because of foul trouble -- sealed Father Lopez's fate in the game.
"We knew that it was not going to be easy," said Florida Air coach Aubin Goporo. "We knew that they'd scouted us and they had some film on us. We wanted to pressure them and deny them the ball, and that's really the only reason we won the game. We were lucky to win in this game."
