FAA also offers weekly trips to Disney, Wet and Wild, Blizzard Beach, Busch Gardens and other Central Florida theme parks. ACADEMICS:pe

The Academy would like to congratulate its 125 students that made either the A/B Honor Roll or the President's List.  Students had to score at least a 3.0 GPA 2nd quarter to earn Honor Roll accolades and 4.0 GPA for 2nd quarter to earn President's List honors.  Teachers set high academic standards and have worked diligently to help students raise achievement to those standards. Both lists can be viewed on the website.

Sea Camp is fast approaching! Those 7th graders who have signed up will be at Sea Camp February 12-15th. Please make sure that your son or daughter has all the necessary items listed in the recent letter sent home. If, for any reason, you are having a difficult time obtaining a few items, please email me at clund@flair.com.

Congratulations to the girls basketball team. In this week's state rankings they are ranked #5 in the state. This is the highest ranking for the girls in school history.

Although every school in the country or state doesn't submit their stats, Maxpreps is the # 1 rated high school sports site in the country.

Take a look at the national statistics:

Our own Jamie Kaplan is ranked #10 in the country in scoring. She is averaging 28.8 Points per game!

GUIDANCE:

1.  The Guidance staff will meet with all our Juniors during English classes this week to register them for the required May 3rd SAT administered here on the FAA campus.  At this class-time guidance session, SAT practice tests and test-taking tips will also be distributed along with college-related publications.  We will encourage the "Class of 2009" to begin to prepare for this very important testing.

2. On a related matter, our second semester SAT Prep course will begin the week of March 10th in preparation for the May 3rd SAT required for all our Juniors.  If you're interested for your son or daughter, please contact Mrs. McMillen in our Accounting Office at:  mmcmillen@flair.com  or (321) 723-3211, ext. 30015.  There is an additional fee for this course.  Make sure your child is prepared for this extremely important test!

3. Our tutoring program is still accepting students for second semester enrollment. Any parent interested in obtaining tutoring for their son or daughter should contact Mrs. Lisa Gray at lgray@flair.com or your son's/daughter's guidance counselor listed below. There is an additional fee for this tutoring service.

4.  "Class of 2008" Information:

  A. Seniors should be fully aware of college application deadlines as late submission could preclude acceptance of an otherwise qualified candidate.

  B. Seniors and their parents should be completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at (www.fafsa.ed.gov).

  C. Seniors are also reminded to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net and Florida Bright Futures Scholarships @ www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org.

5. Parents are reminded to contact their son's/daughter's guidance counselor regarding the college application/admission process. Our Seniors continue to be advised to finalize their college essays; to procure 2 to 3 letters of recommendation; to compile their high school resumes; to sign up for additional standardized testing, (i.e., ACT, TOEFL, SAT); to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse; to investigate scholarship opportunities and sources; and most of all, to maintain or improve their Senior year grades and not procrastinate with their college application material.

Parents: Please speak to your son or daughter about this important process and encourage them to complete, submit, and notify Guidance of all college applications submitted and any subsequent information requests (e.g., first semester transcripts, additional letters of recommendation, residency information, etc.) from those colleges.

Reminder: Acceptance to a college or university is a Florida Air Academy graduation requirement.

5.  FAA Grading Policy:  Cadets who attended FAA and failed a course for the first semester may still earn a full year's academic credit by putting forth more effort and seeking after-school teacher help.  A student who earns a 55 for the first semester need only earn a 65 for the second semester equaling a 60 average for the year to earn one full academic credit.  However, a student who passes the first semester and fails the second, no matter what the average, will earn only the first semester half credit.  This FAA policy exists to help motivate students who had a difficult first semester and want to improve their academic standing over the balance of the school year and has been explained to our cadets at a recent assembly.

6.  The Academic Assistance Program has resumed for students who have earned a D and F or worse or 3 D's or worse for their 2nd quarter grades.

Participation in this, the A/A Program, means:

     a.  Evening study halls will be held in the Dining Room under the close supervision of a Tactical Officer and with college tutors available

     b.  Cadets must attend both weekend study halls

     c.  Cadets must continue to see their teachers for after-school help

     d.  Allowances will be reduced to $5.00

This program will continue until the next printed progress report which cuts off on February 15th or until the student has raised all of his or her grades to C or above.  In any event, a student must remain in the A/A Program through the first 2 weeks of the 3rd quarter.
