Open House: INVITE ONE OF YOUR
FRIENDS!
This Sunday, January 13th
at 1:00 pm. Second semester is coming soon!
From Principal White:
This is an acknowledgement of a mistake
I made with the school calendar.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was placed on the wrong date. Our calendar has the holiday marked as Jan. 14th,
2008 when it should be Jan. 21st, 2008.
Please excuse the inaccuracy. Also, please note that the Academy will not have class on the 21st
of January. (This means the weekend
following exam week is a three day weekend!)
We are now accepting applications for our Summer Session 2008! Our summer session is a six-week non-military program that allows students to earn academic credit while developing better study skills. Have your child take a class to get ahead, which will mean more opportunities for advanced courses later! Honors classes are available. Students will also be able to participate in fun activities such as Equestrian, Scuba, Flight, Sea Camp, Surfing/Skateboarding and much more! FAA also offers weekly trips to Disney, Wet and Wild, Blizzard Beach, Busch Gardens and other Central Florida theme parks. For more information on how to apply, contact the Admissions Department at 321-723-3211 ext 1. Make this summer a fun AND productive time for your child!

Most
day student parents have asked us to remain consistent with
transportation. Day student busses will run at the regularly scheduled
times. However, if students drive or are dropped off, arrival time
can be 8:30AM at the latest.
·
On
Friday, 1/11, the names of students that earned President's List Honors
for a second time this year will be posted. Those students have the
option to take semester finals. Students must declare whether they plan
to test so the school can notify parents to make sure appropriate permission has
been granted by parents and guardians to omit the finals. Boarding
students that choose to omit the examinations can either go home on 1/15 or
remain in their rooms. Day students that choose to omit finals should
remain at home.
If you have any other questions, please
do not hesitate to contact Mr. White at 321.723-3211 ex. 30088.
FAA is pleased to once again offer
Sarum Communico’s course Advanced Reading. This course is a repeat
performance of the reading course we offered last semester. We are
excited to be able to offer this opportunity to expand your cadet’s reading
ability during this semester.
For those of you who are unfamiliar
with the course’s content, Advanced Reading focuses primarily on
increasing reading speed and improving comprehension. Students will also
learn techniques for improved concentration, memory, and review. The Advanced
Reading program is highly individualized and allows students to progress at
their own rate. Most students can expect to double their reading speed
while improving comprehension.
This course will take place on Monday
and Tuesday, February 4 and 5 from 8am until 2:30pm each day.
Students will be responsible for meeting with their teachers and making up
missed work. The cost of the two-day program is $275.00, including
all materials. A follow-up session will be held later in the semester to
check students’ progress and reinforce their reading skills, at no further
cost.
If you
are interested in enrolling your cadet in this program, you may contact
Assistant Principal Melissa Alton via e-mail at malton@flair.com and she will arrange
enrollment and payment through our Accounting Department.

GUIDANCE:
1. Our second semester SAT Prep
course will soon begin in preparation for the May 3rd SAT required for all
our Juniors. If you're interested for
your son or daughter, please contact Mrs. McMillen in our Accounting Office at: mmcmillen@flair.com or (321) 723-3211, ext. 30015. In many cases scores have risen dramatically
from taking this course.
2. Our tutoring program is now accepting students for second semester enrollment. Any parent interested in obtaining tutoring for their son or daughter and starting the second semester on a positive note, may contact Mrs. Lisa Gray at lgray@flair.com or your son's/daughter's guidance counselor listed below. There is an additional fee for this tutoring service.
3. "Class of 2008" Information:
A. Seniors should be fully aware of college application deadlines as late submission could preclude acceptance of an otherwise qualified candidate.
B. Seniors and their parents should be completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at (www.fafsa.ed.gov). (Just prior to the Winter break, a handout was given to each senior with FAFSA information).
C. Seniors are also reminded to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net and Florida Bright Futures Scholarships @ www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org.
4. On a related topic, parents are again encouraged to contact their son's/daughter's guidance counselor regarding the college application/admission process. Our Seniors have been advised to finalize writing their college essays; to procure 2 to 3 letters of recommendation; to compile their high school resumes; to sign up for additional standardized testing, (i.e., ACT, TOEFL, SAT ); to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse; to investigate scholarship opportunities and sources; and most of all, to maintain or improve their Senior year grades and not procrastinate with their college application material.
Parents: Please speak to your son or daughter about this important process and encourage them to complete, submit, and notify Guidance of all college applications submitted.
Reminder: Acceptance to a college or university is a Florida Air Academy graduation requirement.
5. An additional computer has been set up in the Guidance Office for Seniors who either are having trouble accessing college websites due to the Academy's firewall or need counselor assistance in submitting their college applications on-line. This computer is available to seniors during their lunch periods, after school, or during non-core course periods with prior teacher approval.
6. Seniors who feel that their current SAT or ACT scores are not indicative of their true academic ability have been encouraged to register for subsequent testing. Time is growing short to take either of these tests and being able to submit the scores to selected colleges and universities. Registration information and forms are available in the Guidance Office.
7. The results of the ACT-Explore (Grade 9) and the ACT-Plan
(Grade 10) have been mailed home to parents. Please contact your son's or daughter's
guidance counselor with any questions pertaining to these results.
