ACADEMICSpecial Note from the Principal

From Principal White:

This is an acknowledgement of a mistake I made with the school calendar. In haste, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was placed on the wrong date. Our calendar has the holiday marked as Jan. 14th, 2008 when it should be Jan. 21st, 2008. Growing up in Atlanta and having much exposure to Doctor King’s teachings and numerous sacrifices, I am more than embarrassed at this error. Please excuse the inaccuracy. Also, please note that the Academy will not have class on the 21st of January.

GUIDANCE:

1. Our tutoring program is still accepting new students. Any parent interested in obtaining tutoring for their son or daughter, may contact Mrs. Lisa Gray at lgray@flair.com or your son's/daughter's guidance counselor listed below. There is an additional fee for this tutoring service.

"Class of 2008" Information:

2. A. Seniors should be fully aware of college application deadlines as late submission could preclude acceptance of an otherwise qualified candidate.

B. Seniors and their parents should begin reviewing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) website (www.fafsa.ed.gov) to ensure that they have the necessary documentation prior to the January 1st, 2008, opening date for submission. (A handout was given to each senior with FAFSA information).

C. Seniors interested in applying to the Service Academies or for ROTC scholarships are reminded that time is very short and to report to Guidance for assistance with this lengthy process.

D. Seniors are also reminded to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net and Florida Bright Futures Scholarships @ www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org.

E. Finally, seniors are constantly reminded not to procrastinate with their college application process. A number of seniors have already submitted college applications and received their letters of acceptance.

3. On a related topic, parents are once again encouraged to contact their son's/daughter's guidance counselor regarding the college application/admission process. Our Seniors have been advised finalize writing their college essays; to procure 2 to 3 letters of recommendation; to compile their high school resumes; to sign up for additional standardized testing, (i.e., ACT, TOEFL, SAT re-test); to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse; to investigate scholarship opportunities and sources; and most of all, to maintain or improve their Senior year grades and not procrastinate with their college application material.

Parents: Please speak to your son or daughter about this important process and encourage them to complete the college application process.

Reminder: Acceptance to a college or university is a Florida Air Academy graduation requirement.

4. An additional computer has been set up in the Guidance Office for seniors who either are having trouble accessing college websites due to the Academy's firewall or need counselor assistance in submitting their college applications on-line. This computer is available to seniors during their lunch periods, after school, or during non-core course periods with prior teacher approval.

5. Seniors who feel that their current SAT or ACT scores are not indicative of their true academic ability have been encouraged to register for subsequent testing. Time is growing short to take either of these tests and being able to submit the scores to selected colleges and universities. Registration information and forms are available in the Guidance Office.

Guidance Calendar:

Dec. 20th: December SAT scores available on-line at www.collegeboard.com

Jan.1st: Earliest submission date for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Jan. 26th: SAT (Optional)
