Summer session students of FAA will enjoy a fun day on the 4th of July.  Although it will be counted as a school day, there will not be traditional classes.  All students in attendance on the 4th will participate in a field trip to Wickham Park.  There will be athletic competitions, water fun, and food for all.  The Academy is also in the process of finding a safe and enjoyable activity for the evening of the 4th.  Please look for more information in an upcoming parent newsletter.

ADMISSIONS:

Next Open House is July 8 at 12:00 noon.  We will be located in the Dining Hall. If you have any friends or relatives with children who might be a good addition to the cadet corps of FAA, please invite them to this!  Enroll now for the fall!

ATHLETICS:

It has been a good week for former Florida Air Academy baseball players. Andy Gonzalez a 2001 graduate, received his third call-up a couple of weeks ago for the Chicago White Sox. He had four hits in five at-bats Monday, and hit his first Major League home run and had three RBI Tuesday. Andy helped lead the struggling White Sox to two consecutive wins.

Meanwhile, for the Milwaukee Brewers, Prince Fielder (who also attended FAA from 1999-2001) continues to march towards his first-ever all-star appearance in July. He hit his 27th home run on Monday, which leads the National League.

Steve Mayer, Aubin Goporo, and Jim O’Malley have had the pleasure of coaching both of these cadets, lucky them! Very few people and schools have the opportunity to be able to play a part in young student-athletes who end up making it to the ultimate level. We are very fortunate to have an unbelievable group of cadets go through our school. FAA has had several students play for top NCAA Division 1 basketball universities, including two National Championships for Walter Hodge who was here for three years and won the State Basketball Title twice.

Also a 2000 graduate of FAA is Leevan Sands.  Leevan has won Triple Gold Medals in 1999- State Champ; Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, NCAA triple jump champion in 2003; and the Olympic Games held in Athens in 2004.

The influence is not limited to the coaches, teachers, and tac officers, everyone plays a part in their lives while they are at school, and it makes all of us proud to see their success! Go Falcons!

GUIDANCE

Cut-off for the first progress report of the 2007 FAA Summer Session is this Friday, June 29th.  This report will give both students and parents grades through the first 2 weeks of the Summer program.  However, the only grade that counts is the final grade to be received at the conclusion of the Summer Session on July 27th.  This final grade will be comprised of 6 weeks worth of academic work (80%) and the final exam (20%).  Students taking middle school courses will receive four grades and students taking high school courses will receive one grade and 1 academic credit for the successful completion of that high school course.

Students in high school courses earning a D or an F or middle school students earning an F or 2 D's or worse, will be placed in our Academic Assistance program.  This program involves:

1.  Required after-school teacher help

2.  Mandatory attendance at both weekend study halls

3.  Allowance reduced to $5.00

4.  Closely supervised evening study halls in a classroom with tutors available

This Academic Assistance program will continue for at least a week and until all grades have been improved to at least a "C" average.
